Getting over the line

Getting My Fight Back

Chloe was in her final year at Nottingham Trent University when she did a 3-day Grit programme. “I was in a rough place. I was not good mentally, really low. I’d been having suicidal thoughts and the week after I did the Grit programme I was diagnosed with depression. I didn’t want to be a burden on my friends so I’d been lonely and isolated. I didn’t leave the house except to go to lectures.”

Read about how Chloe turned everything around, how “Grit gave me my fight back.”

Talking HE

‍This just out!  Ellie Garraway on the Talking HE podcast talking to host Santanu Vasant about Grit’s work in universities. Summer Reading

If you’re heading off for the beach we’ve got some holiday reading suggestions for you…

‍On the Runnymede Trust blog Grit Black Leaders programme participant and University of Manchester student, Carl Kulimushi, writes about the barriers Black students face in medical schools and how Grit provides pointers towards how med school culture could change.

‍Issues around working class learners and university have been the subject of a lot of debate in education circles this year. Read our contribution, co-authored with University of Sheffield student Max Collins, on the Higher Education Policy Institute blog.

‍If you’re interested in impact reports, then there’s Edge Hill University’s Widening Access and Student Success team report that talks about how Grit’s Students of Colour Programme increases levels of confidence and amplifies belonging. Or the University of Sheffield Access Service Annual Report on the work we’ve been doing with year 10s on belonging, on making the prospect of going into higher education become a meaningful possibility.

The Campaign

‍Last year we did something we’ve never done before at Grit - launched a fundraising campaign. We’ve been raising money so we can deliver programmes to young people in years 10 and 11 from underserved communities. We want to enable them to see more choices in their future than their current – often limited – outlook. Many write off the possibility of staying in education for ‘someone like them’, our programmes allow them to develop the motivation, the confidence and the focus to get a future that excites them.

We set a target of £50,000 and thanks to the extraordinary generosity of supporters - both old and new - we’re 89% of the way there. Take a look at who’s already backed us.

And, if you’d like to help us get us over the line then you can make your contribution here
